Director of Faculty Programs University of Virginia Library
In 2024, University of Virginia Library was awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant to design and release a community hub promoting the use of AI for the creation and adaptation of Open Educational Resources (OER). This session will provide an in-depth look at the project’s progress over its first year, and what is to come in year two. Housed on OER Commons and designed in partnership with the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME), the hub has been designed to support collaboration between educators, librarians, and technologists, enabling them to share resources, engage in discussions, and explore the application of generative AI in OER. The presenters will highlight the role of the OER-AI Fellows Program, whose participants develop resources and guidelines for using AI ethically and effectively in educational settings.
Attendees will learn how staff from UVA Library, ISKME and the project's advisory board continue to develop the hub’s infrastructure, curate AI-related resources, and identify AI tools that support OER creation. The session will cover key activities like ISKME’s environmental scan and resource gap analysis, the creation of the fellowship program, and ongoing community-building efforts that invite diverse perspectives into the hub’s development. Whether you are involved in OER, curious about AI’s role in education, or interested in building collaborative communities, this session will offer insights into how AI and open resources can come together to enhance teaching and learning practices. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions for the presenters.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will discover where to find resources about using generative AI tools for OER authorship
Attendees will be encouraged to find and participate in a community of practice to support their work and learning in the sphere
Attendees will gain insight on how stakeholders in education can actively participate in developing the tools and resources they need in collaboration with technologists
