Manager of Youth Civic Engagement and Creative Expression Brooklyn Public Library
If you’ve ever wondered “Where do I start?” after learning about Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Justice (EDIAJ), Trauma Informed Librarianship, serving diverse needs, or addressing challenging behaviors from staff or patrons this session is for you.
This session is focused on closing the gap between theories and the active practice of working in libraries using Critical Reflective Practice; a process of personal inquiry that asks us to unsettle our assumptions about power, examine our biases, recognize our privilege, and use these revelations to transform how we engage with the world. This practice can be used when working with staff or patrons, when implementing new policies or re-evaluating old ones, and when creating new initiatives, services, and programs.
During this workshop, participants will hear how the presenter uses Critical Reflective Practice to hold herself accountable to her values and beliefs and how this in turn has supported her in her EDIAJ journey. They will be given space and support to reflect during the workshop and leave with tools for engaging in critical reflection when they return to their workplaces.
Learning Objectives:
Define Critical Reflective Practice
Employ critical reflection strategies in their professional work
Justify the importance of engaging in critical reflective practice as a part of EDIAJ work
